The Facial Skin’s Daily Need for a Moisturizer.

Skin experts say that more than 70% of our body is made up of water, which makes it essential for us to see to it that our body, especially our skin, is able to maintain its needed amount and quality of moisture at all times.

At a young age when our skin cells are up and healthy, our skin is able to hold a good amount of moisture, but due to factors like aging, frequent washing, using the wrong skin care and beauty products, unprotected sun exposure, unhealthy lifestyle, poor diet, among the others, our skin’s moisture is slowly stripped-off, and if not addressed so quickly, can cause damage to the skin’s moisture barrier, which can eventually prevent our skin to stay moisturized and can hamper the skin cells’ functioning, which can both lead our skin to look dullness, dryness, and roughness, and make us look older for our age and expose us to a higher risk to wrinkles and premature aging.

Tips for Choosing a Skin Moisturizer.

Is your skin dry or dehydrated?

Such is a key question to ask yourself when you are about to search for Skin Moisturizers, as these skin care products are developed to address the problem of dry and dehydrated skin, which, technically, stem from two (2) different causes.

Skin Moisturizers for Dry Skin.

What is Dry Skin?

Dry Skin occurs as a result of a low supply of oil, or sebum, in the skin and has symptoms like parched look, a feeling of tightness, especially after cleansing, rough skin surface, greater sensitivity, and excess scaling.

Often, this condition is a result of overexposure to the sun, long hot baths or showers, and low-fat diet.1

Oil-based and creamy-textured skin moisturizers suitably address dry skin.

Dry skin can be addressed by using moisturizers that are oil-based or have a creamy texture, or that which contain natural fatty acids, ceramides, or lipids that act to mimic the substances in the skin’s moisture barrier and, in effect, provide skin with oils and promote the repair of the skin’s moisture barrier, and, therefore, improve the skin’s ability to stay moist.

Skin Moisturizers for Dehydrated Skin.

What is Dehydrated Skin?

Dehydrated Skin, or surface dehydration, is one that is caused by the evaporation of moisture through the skin, which is often experienced during the winter, and often caused by environmental factors, like when skin is exposed to the cold and dry weather, low humidity, and temperature changes, also by skin damage and the use of harsh acne treatments and facial cleansers that strip natural lipids in the skin.1

Normally, the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) consists of about 10% water, and skin with water level below this threshold is classified as dehydrated skin condition.

How do you know that your skin is dehydrated?

Some symptoms of dehydrated skin include a feeling of tightness after bath or shower, skin that appears shrunken or shriveled up, feels rough with incessant itching that can even become painful, flaking, scaling, or peeling, redness, and take note, dehydrated skin can usually result in premature aging, i.e, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, including the lack of radiance and the loss of the skin’s elasticity.2

What to look for in a skin moisturizer that can protect skin from dehydration?

Skin Moisturizers for dehydrated skin should contain ingredients that help to hydrate skin, like Aloe Vera Extracts; are natural humectants, like Glycerin, which help to attract moisture from the atmosphere to replenish the skin’s lost moisture while it creates a thin film over the skin’s surface to prevent moisture loss; and that have water-binding ingredients, like Hyaluronic Acid, which helps to improve the skin’s moisture-retention ability, and the same ingredients that help to hydrate skin.
